5 Sep 2003 - OFSTED Report

Small Village School celebrates glowing OFSTED report.

Staff and Governors at Burlescombe C of E Primary School are celebrating a very positive report from OFSTED Inspectors. It praised the very good quality teaching; the excellent leadership of the headteacher, the very good care of the pupils, the genuine partnership with parents, the very good behaviour of pupils and their positive attitudes towards learning.

It also highlights very good financial control, the very good provision for the Foundation stage pupils and the very effective support for pupils with special educational needs.

The report commends the good level of improvements made since the last inspection, noting that all issues identified have been successfully resolved. It praises the excellent contribution made by the headteacher, Sue Brewer in bringing about the necessary improvements.

" The headteacher gives the school excellent educational direction and together with the governors and staff ensures that the work of the school truly reflects its stated aims and values. As a result of the headteacher's excellent leadership the school is very well run."

The inspectors noted many strengths of the school:

* very good teaching throughout the school;
* very good provision for the foundation Stage (3-5ys);
* very good genuine partnership with parents;
* governors, staff and parents much more involved;
* improved strategic planning;
* pupils with Special Educational Needs are supported very effectively;
* the school very successfully encourages pupils? very positive attitudes, good
behaviour and personal development;
* the staff?s commitment to raising and maintaining standards contributes strongly to
the school?s very good ethos.

" Because of the quality of teaching pupils' learning is good". Among the many strengths in teaching the very effective management of mixed age classes (with especially positive effects on learning in Year R) and high expectations were noted.

" Pupils' behaviour is very good and their personal development is very good. Parents feel their children enjoy school, behave well and are helped to become mature and responsible: inspectors fully endorse their positive views."

Headteacher, Sue Brewer said: " We are very proud of our school. The OFSTED report is a celebration of our achievements. The commitment of staff, governors, parents and pupils and involvement of members of the community make this a special school."

All of the key issues identified in the report are being addressed and were already included in the school's improvement plan. Inspectors judged that this demonstrated the very good analysis and understanding of its own strengths and areas for development.

Areas identified for improvement by the inspectors are: to continue to develop work in geography and history; to review the balance of time spent on PE by reducing the time allocated to swimming; and to continue to raise the standards of mathematics and science for the oldest pupils in order to compensate for the gaps developed during their earlier years, that were the result of the previous instability in teaching.
